Modular Acid Converter

Sectional fabrication of a 400,000lb tower.

CREATING EFFICIENCIES

Lopes was awarded this contract by proposing a design method maximizing shop fabrication, and minimizing field efforts; a feat which was deemed impossible by our competitors. Lopes determined, fabricated and structurally braced 180°, 22’-0” wide x 44’-0” long sections. Each section was trial fit to its counterpart, verified, completely shrink wrapped, and shipped to site. Shipments were escorted by signal cars, utility line trucks and police officers to their destination.

SOMETIMES IT JUST TAKES A LITTLE FINESSE

Fabrication planning was very involved. Lopes laid out each section to eliminate interference of the various intricate components, while holding a manageable shipping dimension. Utilizing customer supplied raw materials with varying delivery dates made this task even more difficult. This unit incorporated (4) segmental dished heads; each of which required proper placement, while holding a certain dish radius. An extensive amount of stainless steel welding required delicacy, as stainless steel shrinks when heated. Each weld was tested with liquid penetrant on both root and cap to assure 100% X-Ray quality welds. Finally, an enormous structural fixture was designed to hold overall dimensions and concentricity.
